Hang curtains as close to the ceiling as possible to create an optical illusion that makes the room look taller.

2. Touch the floor

There are three ways on how the curtains should reach the floor:

  • The float – The curtain hangs just above the floor, with a finger-width between the curtain and the floor.

  • The kiss – Only a little amount of fabric is kissing the floor. It can be quite a challenge to get the right length for this look as the measurement must be highly accurate, taking into consideration the hook drop as well.

  • The puddle – Literally you’ll have a puddle of fabric on the floor. The extra fabric will create a luxurious, romantic feel to the room instantly. However, the puddled look may not be suitable if you have pets, or if you are worried about it being a tripping hazard.

3. Have enough fabric

The basic rule of thumb is to make sure the width of the curtain panel (or panels when it is combined) is double the width of your window opening.

This is important for your curtains to have that fluffy look when it is fully closed.

4. Cover up your curtain rods (unless they are very elaborate)

If you want to keep the attention on your designer fabrics, hang curtains in a way that covers your curtain rods.

You can also custom build a false cover to hide the rods. Request a carpenter to build a box header and install the rods behind the box.

This is the method used in many hotel rooms, too 😉

5. Iron your curtains

Invest in a steam iron and iron the curtains in place to give a smooth, tidy appearance. This is especially important after the curtains go through a wash.

6. The right fabrics for the right purpose

Choose the right fabrics for the right purpose. For example, you might want to consider a thicker fabric for the baby’s room so the little one can enjoy a comfortable nap during the day.

For the living room, you can have two separate rows of sheer curtains for daytime and thicker fabric for the night.
