Or is it Malaysia&#8217;s? This debate has raged on for as long as nasi lemak has existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all know that nasi lemak is a dish well loved by people on both sides of the causeway, but when a restaurant <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asiancorrespondent.com\/2017\/08\/nasi-lemak-burger\/#C9pirxOQCX27iHhC.97\">recently launched a nasi lemak burger<\/a><\/span>, it inadvertently sparked off a nationalistic claim on both sides on this popular dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the debate about the origins of nasi lemak has finally been settled once and for all. And it&#8217;s all because of a home renovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Renovation workers&nbsp;hacking the concrete floor of an old bungalow in Ampang were shocked to discover a preserved metal box&nbsp;hidden under it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The worker who found it immediately knew that there was something \u201cspecial\u201d&nbsp;about it. \u201cWe were just hacking to lay pipework when I noticed this old and rusty metal box,\u201d said the worker. \u201cOld metal boxes are probably not what you would consider \u2018unusual\u2019 during renovation, but something inside me told me it was different,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.recommend.my\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/5fec7c62-c541-45d0-b3d9-9f017628bbb5_shutterstock_198094592.jpg\" alt=\"renovation contractor hacking floor\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never expected to find shocking evidence that would put an age-old debate to rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The box contained a leather-bound diary, dating back to the 1400s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one of the entries, the author provides the recipe for <em>&#8216;a coconut-milk and pandan infused rice with a spicy condiment of ikan bilis and chillies&#8217;. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;diary entry is roughly translated below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis Majesty and his warriors were hunting by the river. Tired and frustrated that their hunt went badly, they decided to take a break.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeeing the disappointment in their faces, and wanting to lift their spirits, I decided to serve them a meal from a recipe my mother invented. It consists of coconut rice served with homemade sambal and wrapped in banana leaf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts have examined and confirmed that the piece of paper dates back to 1402, and is believed to have existed during the kingdom of Malacca.&nbsp;&#8220;His Majesty&#8221; is most likely referencing Parameswara, also known as Iskandar Shah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cWe never expected to find something so valuable. Usually, when we renovate a house, the rarest thing we find are old coins and photos.&#8221;<br>\n&#8211; Ken &#8216;Ah Tee&#8217; Pu, renovation contractor<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis discovery is amazing,&#8221; said Dr Rita Pal Sue from the University of Sultan Ishak. &#8220;This is as historically significant as finding the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/lucky-strike_the-man-who-dug-a-well-and-found-an-army\/35232562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terracotta army<\/a><\/span>.&nbsp;And it proves that Malaysia&#8217;s claim to nasi lemak is justified.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;This proves that Malaysia&#8217;s claim to nasi lemak is justified.&#8221;<\/em><br>\n<em>&#8211; Rita Pal Sue, Professor of History, University of Sultan Ishak<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the diary has been thoroughly analysed by the University, it will become a permanent exhibit in Muzium Negara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, Ken the contractor and his team are catching up with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/MFJMtc\">renovation work<\/a><\/span>. &#8220;The owner hired us through <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recommend.my\/\">Recommend.my<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;because he wanted reliable and trustworthy contractors.
