It is fine smoke residue, mostly carbon, and it smears and clings instead of sweeping up. Add the cooking grease that builds up when the windows stay shut, and you get that oily film on your floor. A broom will not shift it. Only a vacuum, a damp mop with mild floor cleaner, a rinse, and a lot of patience will.

By Saturday evening (10 October 2026), 36 areas in Malaysia had unhealthy air readings, including Shah Alam (174), Cheras (172) and Petaling Jaya (164). Schools started closing and we all stayed home and shut our windows tight.

Then we all started noticing the same thing at home: the floor feels grimy and a little sandy yet sticky, even the day after you mop. The dust is not made of hairs or skin or lint, but something different.

It is smoke residue, and it’s so fine that closed windows do not keep it out, so it clings to floors, curtains and sofas in a way normal dust does not. If you’ve ever got cigarette smoke on your clothes, you know what I mean.

This guide explains what the haze actually leaves inside your home, how to clean it off different types of floor, and when it makes more sense to get help.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_86 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-white class="wp-block-heading">Does closing the windows keep haze out?

Not much. Public health specialist Datuk Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar told The Star that with the windows closed, indoor PM2.5 usually sits at 55% to 60% of outdoor levels, and can reach 100% depending on how the home is built.

PM2.5 is the very fine dust that haze is made of. The name means particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller, which is about 30 times thinner than a strand of hair. They slip in through the gaps around doors and windows, float for a long time, and then settle on every surface in the house.

And they do not just sit there. Researchers found that wildfire smoke clings to carpets, curtains and counters, then slowly releases back into the air long after the smoke outside has cleared. Haze is the same kind of smoke, from peat and forest fires. So if you want to cut down how much gets into the room you sleep in, we covered that in Can You Really Haze-Proof Your Bedroom?. But here we will talk about what to do with the haze that has already landed.

Why do floors feel oily during the haze?

Two things are happening at the same time.

1. The haze dust is smoke, not sand. When the smoke comes from burning peat, most of it is carbon. One study of peatland fire smoke in Riau, Sumatra found that about 71% of the PM2.5 was organic carbon. While normal house dust is mostly grit and fibres that you can sweep up with a broom, smoke residue will smear instead, and our humidity helps it cling to tiles and laminate.

2. Cooking grease has nowhere to go. On a normal week, an open window or two lets some of the cooking oil in the air escape. During the haze, everything is shut. That fine oil settles on the floor, especially near the kitchen, and the haze dust sticks to it.

Put the two together and you get that dull, greasy film that you feel under your feet. It is also why a quick sweep does not seem to make any difference.

How to clean haze dust off your floor, step by step

But with a little more effort, the haze can come off. Here’s how to do it properly:

1. Start high, not on the floor. Haze particles float around a long time. So wipe the fan blades, window sills, ledges, light fittings and the tops of cabinets first, with a damp cloth. Whatever you knock down lands on a floor, so clean that last.

2. Don’t use a broom. A broom flicks the finest dust back into the air, and it settles again an hour later. Vacuum first if you have one, ideally with a fine HEPA filter, or go over the floor with a dry microfibre mop.

3. Mop with two buckets. One bucket of warm water with a little mild floor cleaner, and one of clean water to rinse the mop. With only one bucket, you are spreading grey water back across the floor.

4. Squeeze the mop well. Make it damp, not dripping. Extra water just turns the residue into a thin grey paste that dries back on, and it is bad for timber and laminate floors.

5. Change the water more often. In a heavy haze week, expect that to happen every room or two. Start with the bedrooms and finish at the kitchen, where the grease is worst.

6. Get to the edges. The fine dust collects along the skirting, in the corners, and under the sofa, bed and TV cabinet. A mop does not reach most of these, so you need to use a cloth and get down close to the ground.

7. Wash the mop heads and cloths. They are full of haze residue now. Rinse them out properly, or the next mop starts dirty.

8. Then do it again in a few days. As long as the haze is outside, it keeps coming in.

For a 3-bedroom home, that is a long, sweaty afternoon, and you will feel it in your back the next day.

If you would rather spend your afternoons doing something else, our cleaners can clean your home for you. Every session comes with 2 cleaners, and vacuuming and mopping floors is part of the standard job.

While you are at it, check the aircon filters too. If the aircon has been running all week with the windows closed, they have been catching this dust. Most standard filters are not made to stop PM2.5, which we explained in Can your aircon protect you from haze?. But a clogged filter still makes the aircon work harder, and an aircon service after the haze season is always a good idea.

What to use on each type of floor

Haze residue is the same on every floor, but the floors are not.

Floor type

Use

Avoid

Ceramic or porcelain tiles

Mild floor cleaner in warm water; a soft brush on the grout lines

Leaving grey water to dry in the grout

Vinyl or laminate

A well-wrung damp mop and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner

A soaking-wet mop; water seeps into the joints

Timber

A barely damp microfibre mop, then dry it straight away

Standing water, steam mops, oil soap

Marble or terrazzo

Plain water or a stone-safe neutral cleaner

Vinegar, lemon or any acidic cleaner, which can dull the stone

Carpet and rugs

Slow, repeated vacuuming in both directions

Wet scrubbing at home, which pushes residue deeper

If you are not sure what your floor is, a mild, pH-neutral floor cleaner and a well-wrung mop is the safe choice for almost everything.

When to do a deep clean

If you deep clean while the haze is still heavy, the floor will be dusty again in a day. A quick vacuum and mop every few days keeps it under control, and then you do one thorough clean once the air clears.

Once the haze season has cleared, then it’s time to think of a last deep clean. Showers are expected over Peninsular Malaysia in the coming days, which should help.
