What you can check yourself, and what not to touch
A few checks are genuinely safe and might save you a call-out.
- Change the remote batteries. Simple, and it solves a surprising number of “dead” fans.
- Check the wall switch and the trip. Make sure the fan switch is on and nothing has tripped at the distribution box.
- Look at the blades from below. Visible dust buildup, or one blade sitting lower than the others, explains a lot of wobbles.
- Wipe the blades. Switch the fan off at the wall first, let it come to a complete stop, and clean both surfaces of each blade.
- Listen with the fan off. A hum with no movement usually means power is reaching the motor but the motor cannot start, which points at the capacitor.
What to leave alone:
- Do not open the canopy. That is the cover where the fan meets the ceiling, and the mains connections sit inside it.

A few extra conditions that will increase the price:
A new fan point where there was none. If there is no wiring and no hook at that spot, you are paying for the wiring run and casing, which is the RM190 or RM220 tier rather than RM120 or RM150.
High ceilings. A double-volume living room or a high-ceiling landed house needs proper access equipment. Mention the ceiling height when you book so the right technician and equipment turn up the first time.
Plaster ceilings. If the fan needs a support beam above a false ceiling, or the plaster has to be opened and patched, that is extra work on top of the install.

Repair or replace? How to decide
