Did you know that you can book home repairs in KL and Selangor for the same day? On Recommend.my, most Klang Valley bookings are confirmed within 1 hour, and the pro then will WhatsApp you to confirm the time.
When you have a home repair emergency, you need the nearest professional at your door right away. This guide covers the jobs that should be handled on the same day; what you can safely leave until tomorrow; what to do before the pro arrives; and how to give your request the best chance of being solved quickly.
Table of Contents
Is it an emergency, or can it wait until tomorrow?
Note: Call 999 first if there is smoke, fire, a smell of gas, or someone has had an electric shock. The home repair comes later!
For everything else, the question is simple: will the damage get worse, or is the home unsafe if you wait until tomorrow?
Book for today:
- Water you cannot stop. A burst pipe, water coming through the ceiling, or a tap or toilet that keeps running even after you close its small valve.
- Burning smells, sparks or a buzzing socket. Stop using that socket straight away. Our guide on a plug that buzzes or crackles explains why.
- A DB box that trips again as soon as you reset it. One trip can be a one-off. A trip that keeps coming back means something on that circuit is faulty.
- Locked out, or a main door that will not lock at night.
- A fridge or freezer that has stopped, with food inside. Our guide on what to do after a blackout damages your fridge covers how long food keeps.
Can usually wait until tomorrow:
- A dripping tap or a slow drain.
- One socket or one light not working while the rest of the house is fine.
- A ceiling fan that has gone slow or noisy. Our ceiling fan repair guide explains the usual causes.
- A stuck drawer, a loose door knob or a sliding door off its track.
- A water bill that looks too high. Air Selangor suggests a simple meter check: close every tap in the house, wait about an hour, and see whether the meter reading has moved. If it has, you probably have a hidden leak, which is worth booking soon but is rarely a same-day job.
No power in the whole house? Check whether your neighbours have power. If their lights are also off, it is a supply problem for TNB, not a job for an electrician. Check for outage notices on myTNB.
What’s realistic for same-day service, by service
| Service | Same day? | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Plumber | Yes, set up for emergencies | Booking confirmed within 1 hour in most of the Klang Valley. The plumber calls right back, inspects, and quotes before starting. |
| Electrician | Yes, set up for emergencies | Same confirmation and call-back times. The electrician finds the fault first, then gives a final quote. |
| Locksmith | Yes, including after office hours and at night | Once a locksmith accepts the job, they can typically reach you within 30 minutes in an emergency. |
| Handyman | Usually, for small jobs | Call-back within 3 hours. Small jobs like drilling can be requested for the same day. |
| Appliance repair | Depends on who is free | A same-day visit is possible for diagnosis. If a part has to be ordered, the repair itself may need a second visit. |
| Home cleaning | No | Cleaning needs at least 1 day’s notice, so book for tomorrow or later. |

“Confirmed within 1 hour” means your booking has been accepted and a pro is assigned. The pro then calls you to agree the actual time. Apart from the locksmith figure above, nobody can honestly promise an arrival time before that call, because it depends on where the pro is and what they are finishing.
What to do in the first 15 minutes
What you do before the pro arrives often decides how big the repair bill is.
If it is water:
- Close the nearest valve. Toilets and sinks usually have a small valve on the pipe underneath. If you cannot find one, or the leak is in a wall or ceiling, close the main valve. In a landed house it is usually next to the water meter near the gate. In a condo, the meter and valve are often in a cupboard or meter room along the corridor. Ask your management office if you are not sure.
- Keep water away from electrics. If water is reaching sockets, an appliance or a ceiling light, switch off that circuit at the DB box. Do this only if the floor around the DB box is dry.
- Move what you can and catch the rest. Towels, buckets, and anything valuable off the floor.
- In a condo, tell the management office, especially if the water is coming from the unit above. They may need to shut off a riser or let you into another unit. Our older post on a leak from the neighbour upstairs covers who is usually responsible.
If it is electrical:
- Switch off at the DB box if it is safe to reach, with dry hands and dry feet. If you can tell which circuit is the problem, switch off just that one. If not, switch off the main switch.
- Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again straight away. Try once. If it trips again, leave it off.
- Unplug whatever you were using when it tripped or sparked, so the electrician can test it separately.

If you are locked out: check whether anyone else in the family has a spare key before calling. It may be unlikely, but it will be good to have your IC and something with your address on it ready, since a careful locksmith will want to be sure it is your home.
In every case, take photos and a short video. Film the leak or the fault, the DB box showing which switch has tripped, and the model label if an appliance is involved. You will use these in the next step.
How to get matched faster on Recommend.my
Most of the delay in an urgent booking comes from back-and-forth: the pro calls to ask what the problem is, what brand it is, whether there is parking. You can remove most of that when you book.
1. Pick the closest service. Leaks, blockages and toilets go to plumbing. Trips, sparks and dead sockets go to electrical. Doors, drilling and small fixes go to handyman. If you are not sure, describe what you see and the team will route it. A water heater that trips the power, for example, is usually an electrician’s job first.
2. Say it is urgent, and give a time window. “Any time today”, “before 6pm” or “after 7pm once I am home” is much easier to match than “ASAP”.
3. Describe what happened in two or three sentences. What you saw, when it started, and what you have already done (“water from the kitchen ceiling since 8am, main valve now closed”).
4. Attach the photos and video. A clear photo lets the pro bring the right parts on the first visit. Our handyman price guide has a list of which photos help most.
5. Give access details. Your area, property type, and anything the pro needs to get in: a visitor pass, parking, lift booking, or a guardhouse that needs to be told.
6. Keep your phone close. The pro calls within 3 hours to confirm. A missed call is the easiest way to lose a same-day slot.
Does urgent work cost more?
For locksmiths, yes, and the rates are published. For plumbers and electricians, the service pages do not list a separate after-hours rate. The price is agreed after the pro has seen the problem.
| Urgent job | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Lock picking, normal hours | RM80 |
| Lock picking, after office hours | RM150 |
| Lock picking, midnight | RM300 |
| Water leak repair | RM50 to RM400 |
| Burst or cracked pipe, repair or replace | RM80 to RM400 |
| Clogged toilet or sink | RM50 to RM500 |
| Basic wiring check | RM80 |
| Detailed electrical troubleshooting (for example, repeated tripping) | RM250 |
Source: Recommend.my service pricing and the plumbing and locksmith service pages, correct as at 27 September 2026. Prices are starting rates and exclude parts. Ranges are wide because a leak behind a tiled wall is a very different job from a loose joint under the sink.
Two things worth knowing before the pro arrives:
- You get a final quote before any work starts. For plumbing and electrical jobs, the pro inspects first, then quotes. You decide whether to go ahead.
- If you decide not to go ahead, there is an RM80 transport fee. If you proceed with the job, the fee is waived.
If you are booking late in the day, ask about any after-hours charge when the pro calls to confirm, so there are no surprises.
