Bedroom Magic: Upsize Your Kid’s Room With These Platform Bed Storage Ideas

Up until standard 4, I shared a bedroom with my sister. And even though the bedroom space was cramped, I fondly remember days spent building Lego on the floor, or building a blanket fort with cushions from the living room sofa.

Now, as a parent, I want to give my kids the same creative freedom. But, still need to be practical lah. Because let’s face it, Legos and blanket forts need to be tidied up at the end of the day.

That’s why, when I look back, I wish I had some of these raised platform bed storage cabinets in my room. Then I would have had a practical space to keep my toys, yet have it easily ready for the next day.

What is platform bed storage?

A platform bed is basically a raised bed frame for you to put your mattress on. The difference between a platform bed and regular bed frame is that regular bed frames have a slatted base under the mattress, made of several planks. But in a platform bed, a single flat base is used instead.

And, in a regular bed, your mattress is usually “sunken” into the bed frame, so the frame creates a raised border around the mattress. Platform beds don’t have this, and the mattress is free to slide around.

Why build a raised platform bed with storage?

When you build a raised platform bed, you have an opportunity to add custom-built cabinets underneath, or off to the side. You can extend it any way you like to accommodate a range of bedroom design ideas. So, it really becomes part of the overall interior design of your kid’s bedroom.

These raised platform beds add a cohesive design element to what can sometimes be a cluttered kids’ room, while also providing ample storage underneath the bed. For the entire bedroom, you can either use bright colours or go for a more neutral palette. The simple raised platform bed will blend seamlessly into the design. These beds can be positioned to the sides, drawing attention to a themed wall, a mirrored closet and storage space, or an entertainment console display.

Creating Space for a Play Zone

If you’re setting up a child’s bedroom to be a fun play environment, then a raised platform bed can help separate these two spaces. A long or large raised platform bed can take up one section, and the remaining open space on the platform can be used as a makeshift play area. The storage that is built into the platform bed makes it quick and easy for kids to tidy up their toys when playtime ends.

This is also a great space-saving idea, as the rest of the room can accommodate other functions, such as a study area. Raised platform beds allow you to make the most of the room, providing everything a child needs and more with a thoughtful design.

A Multi-Purpose Room

A large raised platform bed may take up half of the room. But in return, it gives you a versatile play, study, or hangout area. The storage can also be an open shelving display to display your child’s prized possessions. Adding height to a large platform allows you to have some creative liberties with the build.

How High Do You Want To Go?

Create a loft bedroom for your kids (sort of)! A raised platform acts like a “stage” for your kids to spend their time. And with more height, you also get more storage compartments to keep the space clean and tidy.

Room For Two (or More)

A raised platform bed is also an excellent option for siblings. You can create a bunk bed, even with limited floor space. As long as you have adequate ceiling height and wall-mounted lights, it’s possible to accommodate two or even three kids in one room.

Another option for siblings is to add a partition between them. This gives each child some privacy, along with a space to display their personal belongings.
