How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Handyman In Malaysia?

Do you have a bookshelf from IKEA that’s still in the box? Or maybe two curtain rods still waiting to be put up. Or a bathroom door that rubs on the frame every time you close it.

None of these are big jobs to do. But together, they add up. And for many busy people, it’s too daunting to tackle over a weekend.

So, why not hire a handyman to get it done for you?

What does a handyman cost in Malaysia in 2026?

Most small handyman jobs in Malaysia cost between RM80 and RM250 per task. The per-task rate is the most common way of charging, and it already includes the pro’s time, tools and travel within their usual coverage area. But materials are usually charged separately. If the job needs a new hinge, a bracket, a length of pipe or a tin of paint, either you buy it or the pro sources it and adds it to the bill.

These are the indicative rates for standard bookable jobs on Recommend.my. Prices are per task unless stated otherwise, and cover labour only.

Mounting and hanging

JobPrice
Accessories mounting (small items, hooks, hangers)RM30
Window handle installationRM50
Shelf up to 180cm x 150cmRM60
Wall clothes hangerRM80
Door knob installationRM80
Picture, frame, mirror or wall decor (1 unit)RM80
Ceiling hangerRM100
Picture, frame, mirror or wall decor (2 units)RM120
Shelf up to 250cm x 200cmRM120
Drilling into wallRM80
TV mount, below 49 inchesRM180
TV mount, 49 inches and aboveRM220

Mounting gets cheaper per unit once you batch it. Three picture frames in one visit is RM150, not RM240. If you have a few things to put up, do them in one booking.

Furniture assembly and repair

JobPrice
Cabinet up to 120cm x 100cmRM75
Assemble new table, desk or chairRM180
Assemble new cabinet or shelvesRM180
Cabinet up to 200cm x 180cmRM180
Assemble new wardrobeRM180
Assemble new bed frameRM200
Cabinet up to 280cm x 250cmRM250
Dismantle only (bed, wardrobe, table or cabinet)RM150
Dismantle and reassemble wardrobeRM250
Dismantle and reassemble bed frameRM300
Repair bed (loose, broken, noisy)RM130
Repair sofa or chair (leg, joint, unstable)RM150
Repair cabinet or shelf (door, hinge, loose)RM150

Dismantle-and-reassemble is the one people underestimate when they move house. It is priced higher than a fresh assembly because taking apart used furniture is slower and riskier than building a new one, especially with particleboard that has already been screwed together once. If you are moving, budget for it properly and read our guide on house moving costs in Malaysia.

Doors, windows and locks

JobPrice
Fix or replace door hingesRM100
Repair door that will not close (hinge, magnet, stopper, roller)RM150
Repair door lock or handleRM150
Install new window lock, handle or hingesRM150
Repair window lock, handle or hingesRM180
Install new window glassRM200
Install a new doorRM250
Repair foldable doorRM250
Repair window glassRM250

Doors are the single most common handyman call in Malaysian homes, and humidity is a big part of why. For the full breakdown of what goes wrong and what each fix costs, see our guide to common door repair problems.

Curtains and blinds

JobPrice
Repair or fix curtain rod or railingRM150
Install new curtain rod or railingRM180
Install and repair curtain rod or railingRM250

Curtain rods look like the easiest job on this list and cause more wall damage than almost anything else. The bracket has to hit something solid, and a lot of condo walls are hollow brick or drywall. If you want to attempt it, our guide on how to drill holes in your wall the right way will save you a repair bill.

Walls, tiles and wet areas

JobPrice
Resealing bathroom fixtures and tilesRM1 per foot
Bathroom tilingRM3 per sq ft
Fix or replace leaky tap or pipe (1 unit)RM50
Sealing wall cracksRM100 to RM300
Repair lighting in hard-to-reach areasRM200 to RM300
Repair water-damaged wall including paintingRM250 to RM400
Wall painting, up to 1,000 sq ftRM600
Wall leakage repair with waterproofingRM1,500 to RM2,500

The jump from RM250 to RM2,500 in that table is the difference between treating a stain and fixing what caused it. A damp patch on a bedroom wall that keeps coming back after repainting is a water ingress problem, not a paint problem. Our house waterproofing guide explains how to tell which one you have.

For a full repaint rather than a patch, the rates differ from handyman pricing. See our house painting price guide for Klang Valley.

How do handymen charge in Malaysia?

There are three ways you will see a handyman price the job.

1. Per task. This is the most common, and it is how the tables above work. You pay one price for “mount a TV below 49 inches” or “assemble a wardrobe”, no matter if it takes 40 minutes or 90.

2. Per hour. For general labour that doesn’t fit a listed task, handymen on Recommend.my charge from RM40 per hour. This is useful for a list of small things, like tightening, adjusting and moving, that are hard to price one by one.

3. Per unit or per foot. Bigger surface jobs are priced by size. Bathroom tiling is RM3 per sq ft and resealing is RM1 per foot.

Whichever way it is charged, a handyman supplies the labour and tools, not the door, the glass or the grille. And the prices in this guide are for standard jobs. The pro inspects first, then gives you a quote before any work starts.

What makes a handyman quote go higher than you expected

The rates above assume a straightforward job in a normal home. But there are some things that move the number.

1. Wall type. Solid concrete or brick is predictable. But if you have hollow brick or plaster walls, then hanging items off it can be difficult. A TV bracket on thin partition wall may need a mounting plate spanning two studs, which adds time and material. Tile is slower again, since drilling through glaze without cracking it needs the right bit and a steady hand.

2. Height and access. Anything above about 3 metres needs a ladder or scaffold, and often a second person for safety. Hard-to-reach light fittings are priced separately for exactly this reason.

3. Travel. Recommend.my will match your requirements with the best and nearest pros, but if you have special requirements that can only be handled by a pro further away, there may be travel costs.

4. Condition of what you already have. Reassembling a five-year-old wardrobe with stripped screw holes takes longer than assembling a new one. Same job on paper, different job in practice.

5. What the inspection finds. A door that will not close might be a RM150 hinge adjustment, or it might be a swollen frame that needs planing and refitting. A good pro inspects first, then quotes, then works. That’s why any pricing is an estimate until site visit.

Which photos to send for a faster, more accurate quote

Most handyman quotes change on site for one reason: the pro didn’t know what the wall, door or furniture looked like until they arrived. Two or three photos solve most of that.

JobWhat to photograph
TV mountThe wall from a step back, plus a close-up of the surface. Tell us the TV size and whether you already have the bracket.
Shelves, frames, mirrorsThe wall, and each item next to a known object (a door or a chair) so the size is clear
Curtain rod or trackThe whole window with the wall above it, and the old brackets if they fell out
Door that won’t closeThe whole door, then the hinge side and the lock side up close
Furniture assemblyThe box label or the product page, so the pro knows the model
Dismantle and reassembleThe furniture as it stands now, and the room it is going to
Wall crack or water damageThe crack or stain with a hand or a coin beside it for scale, and the area above it

If you can knock on the wall, say whether it sounds solid or hollow. That one detail changes the fixings a pro brings.

Handyman, electrician, plumber or contractor: who should you call?

A handyman takes the odd jobs one person can finish in one visit. When the same door, cabinet or wall needs bigger or more specialised work, it belongs to another trade.

If the job is…CallWhy
Mounting, assembly, small door, window or furniture repairs, sealing cracks, touch-up paintingHandymanSmall, general work finished in one visit
New plug points, new light points, wiring, a DB box that keeps tripping, ceiling fansElectricianWiring work in Malaysia must be done by a competent person registered with the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga)
A pipe leak you cannot see, a blocked drain, a new sink, toilet or water heaterPlumberNeeds plumbing tools and parts a handyman doesn’t carry
Hacking walls, extending the kitchen, redoing a bathroom, new built-in cabinetsRenovation contractorLarge jobs that take days or weeks, and may need council permits and a CIDB-registered contractor

Some jobs sit on the line. A handyman can replace one leaking tap or change a light in a hard-to-reach spot. But if the tap leak turns out to be a pipe inside the wall, or the light won’t work with a new bulb, it becomes a plumber or electrician job.

Ceiling fans look like a mounting job, but they need an electrician. Our ceiling fan repair guide has those prices. For big jobs, read how to avoid renovation scams in Malaysia before paying any deposit.

Before you book: a quick checklist

✅ Write down every job. Batch them into one visit. Two picture frames in one booking is cheaper than two separate bookings.

✅ Decide who buys the materials. If it is you, get the exact specification from the pro first.

✅ Take photos and send them ahead. A photo of the door, the wall, or the model number gets you a far more accurate quote than a description.

✅ Check with your condo management. Some buildings need a work permit for drilling, or restrict working hours. Sort this before the pro is standing at the guardhouse.

✅ Clear the work area. Move furniture and anything breakable away from the job site.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy the materials myself?

It is up to you. The prices in this guide are for labour. You can buy the parts yourself (ask the pro for the exact size or model first), or the pro can buy them and add the cost to your bill.

Can one handyman do several jobs in one visit?

Yes, and it is cheaper. Mounting prices drop per unit when you do more: one frame is RM80, two are RM120, and three or more are RM150 in total. List every job in one booking.

Is the price in the table the final price?

It is the standard price for a normal job. The pro checks the job on site and gives you a quote before starting. The price only changes if the job is bigger than described, for example a hollow wall that needs special fixings.

How fast can I get a handyman?

For most places in the Klang Valley, you get a confirmation within 1 hour of booking. The pro then calls you to agree on a time.

Can a handyman fix electrical or plumbing problems?

Small ones, like replacing one leaking tap or changing a hard-to-reach light. New wiring, plug points and hidden pipe leaks need an electrician or a plumber.

Do you have handymen in my area?

Yes, in most of Malaysia’s main cities. We have over 1,100 handymen each in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, from Cheras, Puchong and Shah Alam to Petaling Jaya, Cyberjaya and Klang, plus 129 in Johor and 111 in Penang. Put your area in the booking form and we will match you with the nearest pro.
